What is a split drive anchor?
The split drive anchor is a one-piece pre-expanded expansion anchor made of carbon steel. It’s designed for use in a solid base material like concrete. It’s best used in in dry, interior, non-corrosive environments.
How does it work?
The anchor is hammered into a 1/4” hole. The two pre-expanded halves are compressed on the way into the hole. Once in the hole, the two halves attempt to regain their original shape and hold the anchor in place by friction.
When should I use one?
This anchor is suited for permanent, tamper-proof installation. It is best for light duty fastening into concrete.
Is this anchor permanent?
Yes, this anchor is used to permanently fasten. The only ways to remove the fastened object are cutting off the head off of the anchor, destroying the object being fastened, or pulling the anchor out to concrete failure.
What materials are used to make this anchor?
These anchors are made of Grade 2 carbon steel with a zinc coating.
What are the available diameters?
The split drive anchor is only available in a 1/4” diameter.
How do I determine which length to use?
To determine which length is needed, add the minimum embedment of 1-1/8” to the thickness of the material being fastened. Round head split anchors are measured from underneath the head while flat countersunk head anchors are measured as an overall length including the head.
What’s the difference between round and flat head anchors?
The round head anchor has a rounded top with a flat bottom. Its length is measured from underneath the head. The flat head anchor has a beveled bottom used to countersink the anchor into the wood being fastened. The flat-headed anchor is measured as an overall length including the head.
What materials are best for this anchor?
This anchor is designed for use in solid concrete. It should not be used in hollow base material, such as brick or block.
How do I install a split drive anchor?

Do I have to use a hammer drill when drilling the hole?
Yes. A hammer drill will create a hole that meets the tolerance requirements of the anchor
Do I need to use a heavy hammer to install the anchor?
No. This anchor can be driven into the concrete with a standard hammer.
What is the minimum embedment for the flat head anchor?
The minimum embedment is 1-1/8”.
Is it necessary to clean out the hole before I install the anchor?
Yes, it is important. Cleaning the hole ensures proper holding values for installation of the anchor.
Why do all split drive anchors have the same pull out values?
They all have the same values because they all have been tested at the same embedment depth of 1-1/8”.
If I’m installing anchors, how far apart should I space them?
These anchors should be spaced a minimum of ten anchor diameters from each other, measuring from center to center.
What’s the difference between the spike and the split drive anchor?
The major difference is that the split drive anchor has two pre-expanded halves while the spike has an “S” curve in the body of the anchor. The spike is sold only through Powers Fasteners and the split drive anchor is sold by many different manufacturers.
Is the split drive anchor better than the Tapcon masonry screw?
There is no “best” anchor because each anchor has unique features and benefits. In most instances, determining which fastener is the best for a project is based on the specific application and personal preference.
Can I use this anchor in ACQ lumber?
No. The zinc-plated anchor should not be used in ACQ treated lumber.
Can I add a washer to the flat head anchor?
No. The flat head anchor has a beveled head that would not sit flush against a washer. If a washer is required, then the use of a round-headed anchor should be considered.
Can I get this anchor in stainless steel?
No. The anchor is only available in Grade 2 carbon steel with a zinc coating.
