Red Head manufactures and sells the Multi-set, which is a drop-in anchor.
One of the Multi-set drop-in anchor styles is called the RL. This
anchor is an internally threaded anchor designed for use in solid
concrete and is manufactured without a lip. It can be used below the
surface of the concrete at deeper embedment to allow potentially better
performance. The RL drop-in anchor is considered a heavy duty anchoring
system and is a shell type anchor made from steel with an internal
expander plug sealed within the shell. Multi-set RL anchors are
manufactured from zinc plated carbon steel, 18-8 stainless steel and 316
stainless steel.
Multi-set RL Approvals & Listings
The multi-set RL drop-in anchor meets or exceeds:
US Government G.S.A specification A-A-55614 Type 1 (formerly GSA: FF-S-325 Group VIII).

Multi-Set RL Features
The expander slots that are cut into the shell of this concrete
anchor at the opposite end of the threads allow for easy setting and
superior performance. The cone insert is designed to expand the
Multi-set RL anchor from the inside out when set by using a hammer and
setting tool.
Multi-set RL Rust Resistance
With three different materials to chose from, this anchor can be
chosen to meet any rust resistance requirements. For indoor use with no
moisture present, the standard zinc plated carbon steel anchor is
suitable. If the application calls for the anchor to be placed outdoors
where moisture and other chemicals are present, then the 18-8 stainless
steel version should be used. For extreme rust resistance, the 316
stainless steel drop-in works well even when submerged in salt water and
other corrosive environments.
Multi-set RL (Other Choices)
The Multi-set RL drop-in anchor is just one style of the
multi-set drop-in anchors that are available. The RM version comes with
a lip designed for controlled embedment depths. The RX version is
specifically designed for use in hollow core pre-cast or post tension
concrete. The CL version of this drop-in anchor has internal coil
threads for use with coil thread bolts.
Multi-set RL Internal Threads
The RL Multi-set drop in anchor has internal national coarse
threads that extend about 1/3 of the total length of the anchor. They
are designed to accept any bolt or threaded rod with the matching
national coarse threads. The 1/4" has 20 threads per inch, the 3/8"
anchor has 16 threads per inch, the 1/2" has 13 threads per inch, the
5/8" has 11 threads per inch and the 3/4" anchor has 10 threads per
inch.
Multi-set RL Drop-in Anchor Embedment Depth
Each diameter of this drop-in anchor comes in one length only.
The length of the anchor is the minimum embedment that the anchor should
be placed into the concrete. The RL version of this anchor doesn't have
a lip, which allows for deeper embedment and possibly better
performance.
Multi-set RL (Expanding the Anchor)
All mechanical type anchors must be expanded once they are placed
in the hole of the base material. Using a setting tool designed for
each specific diameter will effectively set the drop-in anchor. For the
RL drop-in anchor to be expanded properly, the lip of the setting tool
must meet the lip of the anchor.
Multi-set RL Hole Diameter
The size of a multi-set Rl anchor is designated by the internal
thread, or by the diameter of bolt or threaded rod that can be threaded
into the anchor. The outside diameter is larger than the designated
diameter and equals the diameter of the hole that must be drilled. A
1/4" anchor needs a 3/8", 3/8" a 1/2" hole, the 5/8" needs a 7/8" hole
and the 3/4" needs a 1" hole. These holes must be drilled using a hammer
drill and a carbide bit that meets ANSI standards B212 15-1994.
Multi-set RL Drop-in Anchor Installation
1. Drill a hole in the concrete using a hammer drill and carbide
tipped bit meeting ANSI standards. Make sure the depth of the hole is at
least deep enough to meet the minimum embedment depth for the anchor
being used.
2. Remove all dust and debris from the newly drilled hole before proceeding in the installation process.
3. Drop the anchor into the hole and tap with a hammer if needed until the anchor is flush with the surface of the concrete.
4. Insert the concrete setting tool for the diameter of anchor
being used into the internal threaded end of the anchor. Strike the
setting tool with a hammer until the lip of the setting tool touches the
lip of the anchor.
The multi-set RL drop-in anchor internally threaded anchor
designed for use in solid concrete and is manufactured without a lip.
These types of drop-in anchors can be used in heavy duty applications.
It is important to choose the correct size of anchor when using these drop-in anchors.
As with any anchoring project, it is important to keep safety in mind and follow instructions carefully. Always remember to wear safety goggles, handle all tools with extra care and follow all technical specifications. This article is meant to serve only as a basic explanation of concrete fasteners. Always refer to manufacturer's instructions or consult a contracting expert during any anchoring project.
