The acorn head Sleeve-All® sleeve anchor is Simpson Strong-Tie’s name for their sleeve anchor
that is manufactured with an acorn nut in place of the standard hex
nut. The acorn nut gives the Sleeve-All® sleeve anchor a finished look
and is versatile because it can be used in most types of masonry such as
concrete, block or brick.
Acorn Sleeve-All® - Finish and Material
The acorn Sleeve-All® sleeve anchor is available in both the
standard zinc plated carbon steel as well as the 304 stainless steel.
The anchor body meets minimum tensile strengths of 50,000 psi and the
nut, washer and sleeve are made from the SAE J403 or ASTM A563 types of
steel.
Acorn Sleeve-All® - Federal Specifications and Codes
Meets federal specification requirements A-A-1992A
Acorn Sleeve-All® - Available Diameters
The acorn Sleeve-All® sleeve anchor comes in one diameter of
1/4”. All 1/4” Sleeve-All® sleeve anchor have an acorn nut head and are
not available with the standard hex nut.
Acorn Sleeve-All® - Available Lengths
The 1/4” acorn headed Sleeve-All® sleeve anchor is manufactured
in two lengths. The length of the acorn headed Sleeve-All® sleeve
anchor needed is determined by the thickness of the material that is
being fastened down. The acorn Sleeve-All® sleeve anchor length is
measured from under the head of the acorn nut and washer.
Acorn Sleeve-All® - Minimum Embedment
The minimum embedment for the 1/4” acorn Sleeve-All® sleeve
anchor is determined by the maximum fixture thickness. Subtracting the
maximum fixture thickness of the overall length of the sleeve anchor
gives the minimum embedment depth for each diameter of acorn Sleeve-All®
sleeve anchor. The maximum thickness of material for embedment for the
1-3/8” long acorn Sleeve-All® sleeve anchor is 1/4” and the maximum
thickness for the 2-1/4” long Sleeve-All® sleeve anchor is 1-1/8”. (See
chart below.)
Acorn Sleeve-All® - Diameter of Hole
Hole size is equal to the diameter of the acorn Sleeve-All®
sleeve anchor. The 1/4” acorn Sleeve-All® sleeve anchor requires a 1/4”
hole to be drilled into the base material. Hole size is critical
because an oversized hole may make it impossible for the acorn
Sleeve-All® sleeve anchor to be set which will cause the holding values
to be reduced. When drilling a hole into the base material, use an ANSI
standard bit supplied in a hammer drill to insure hole quality and
tolerance.
Acorn Sleeve-All® - Length of Hole
When drilling a hole for an acorn Sleeve-All® sleeve anchor into
the base material, drill the hole 1/4” to 1/2” deeper than the sleeve
anchor will penetrate. This will leave room for any dust or debris that
may be created during the installation process.
Acorn Sleeve-All® - Diameter of Hole in Fixture
The hole in the fixture that the sleeve anchor will go through
must be larger than the designated diameter of the acorn Sleeve-All®
sleeve anchor being used. Most holes in fixtures are true diameters,
but concrete anchors have a designated diameter of the anchor slightly
larger than the true diameter. The hole in the fixture needs to be a
minimum of 1/8” larger than the diameter of the acorn sleeve anchor
being installed.
Acorn Sleeve-All® - Installing
1. Drill a hole in the base material using a hammer drill and a
1/4” ANSI standard carbide bit. Drill the hole deep enough so that the
hole will be a minimum of 1/4” deeper than the acorn Sleeve-All® sleeve
anchor will penetrate.
2. Compressed air should be used to clean out the hole.
3. Push the acorn Sleeve-All® sleeve anchor through the hole in
the fixture and into the hole drilled in the base material, until the
acorn nut and washer are flush with the surface of the fixture.
4. Use a wrench to turn the acorn nut clockwise until tight.

Stainless Steel Acorn Sleeve-All®
The acorn Sleeve-All® does not come in any type of stainless steel that is offered by Simpson Strong-Tie. Concrete Fasteners, Inc. does have a complete line of stainless steel sleeve anchors which include the acorn headed sleeve anchor.
As with any anchoring project, it is important to keep safety in mind and follow instructions carefully. Always remember to wear safety goggles, handle all tools with extra care and follow all technical specifications. This article is meant to serve only as a basic explanation of concrete fasteners. Always refer to manufacturer's instructions or consult a contracting expert during any anchoring project.
