Easy-Set is the name Simpson Strong-Tie Anchor Systems® calls their
medium to heavy-duty pin drive anchor. The pin drive anchor is also
referred to as a nail anchor or a strike anchor. The Easy-Set pin drive
expansion anchor’s body is made from hot-rolled steel and the pin is
hot-wrought carbon steel, plated in a yellow zinc dichromate. Each
Easy-Set pin drive expansion anchor is packaged with the correct number
and size of nut and washer. Each nut and washer is yellow zinc plated.
Easy-Set Base Materials
The Easy-Set pin drive expansion anchor is designed to be used in
a solid base material such as concrete or grout filled block. Easy-Set
pin drive expansion anchors expand in a very specific and concentrated
area and will not work in hollow block, brick or other lightweight
materials.
Thickness of Base Material
It is very important to make sure that the base material in which
the Easy-Set is being placed is a minimum of 1-1/2” thicker than the
embedment of the anchor. For example, if a 1/2” Easy-Set pin drive
expansion anchor is being installed at a 2” embedment depth in concrete,
then the concrete needs to be at a minimum 3” thick.
Diameters
The Easy-Set pin drive expansion anchor is sold in six (6)
diameters: 1/4”, 5/16”, 3/8”, 1/2”, 5/8” and 3/4” with each anchor
manufactured in a number of different lengths, depending on the
thickness of the fixture to be fastened.
Easy-Set Length of Anchor
The length of the Easy-Set pin drive expansion anchor to be used
for any specific application is determined by adding the thickness of
the material being fastened plus the minimum embedment plus space for
the nut and washer. The Easy-Set pin drive expansion anchor is measured
as an overall length with most diameters manufactured in three
different lengths. However, the 1/4” has two lengths, the 5/16” has only
one length and the 1/2” comes in four lengths.
Diameter of Hole
The diameter of the hole that needs to be drilled in the base
material for the Easy-Set pin drive expansion anchor is equal to the
diameter of the anchor being used. A 3/8” diameter Easy-Set pin drive
expansion anchor requires a 3/8” hole. The hole should be drilled using
a hammer type drill and carbide tipped bit meeting ANSI standards.
This will insure that the proper matched tolerance hole is not an
oversized hole, which can result in difficulty setting the anchor and
will reduce the holding values of the Easy-Set pin drive expansion
anchor.
Depth of Hole
The hole needs to be drilled to a depth sufficient to allow the
Easy-Set pin drive expansion anchor to be placed in the base material a
minimum embedment depth for the diameter of the Easy-Set pin drive
expansion anchor being installed. It is very important that the hole be
drilled a minimum of 1/4” deeper than the embedment depth to allow
space for any dust created during the drilling and installation process.
Easy-Set Critical Edge Distance
Easy-Set pin drive expansion anchor should not be set closer to an
unsupported edge of concrete to obtain the necessary published holding
values. The critical edge distance is directly related to the diameter
of Easy-Set pin drive expansion anchor being installed and can be found
in the product information chart below.
Easy-Set Critical Spacing Distance
Each Easy-Set pin drive expansion anchor must be installed at a
minimum distance from each other for the Easy-Set pin drive expansion
anchor holding values to be effective. The space between each Easy-Set
pin drive expansion anchor is different for each diameter and increases
as the diameter size increases.
