When fastening to concrete, brick or block base material, a hammer drill must be used. Remember, always use eye and ear protection when using a hammer drill.
Tapcon Installation Tips:
- The hole should be drilled 1/2” deeper in the base material than the anchor will penetrate.
- The deeper the embedment of the anchor in the base material, the better the holding values.
- Tapcon screws are designed for use in concrete, brick or block base material.
- The size of the hole to be drilled is 5/32” for 3/16” diameter screw and 3/16” for 1/4” diameter screw.
- Minimum embedment for tapcon screws is 1” and maximum embedment is 1-3/4”.
- The length of the tapcon required is determined by adding the thickness of the material being fastened to the minimum embedment.
Tapcon Installations:
- Insert the tapcon through the hole in the fixture and into the base material.
- Using a drill set in the rotation mode, drive the screw into the base material until snug making sure not to over torque.
Tapcon Concerns:
- When working in outdoor environments, stainless steel anchors should be used for increased rust resistance.
- If you are working indoor, zinc-plated anchors should be sufficient.
- As a rule of thumb, the anchor should be spaced a minimum of 10 anchor diameters away from each other and no closer than 5 anchor diameters from an unsupported edge.
