A fence post may sometimes needs to be attached to a concrete wall or floor. Many contractors have found that Drop-In Anchors work well for this type of application. When fastening to concrete, brick or block base material, a hammer drill must be used. Remember, always use eye and ear protection when using a hammer drill.
Drop-In Anchor Installation Tips:
- The hole should be drilled 1/2” deeper in the base material than the anchor will penetrate. The deeper the embedment of the anchor in the base material, the better the holding values.
- Drop-in anchors are designed for use in solid concrete and should not be used in brick or block base material. The size of the hole drilled into the base material is larger than the designated diameter of the drop-in anchor.
Drop-In Installation:
- Insert the drop-in anchor in the hole.
- The internal plug being pushed down the anchor using a setting tool expands the drop-in anchor. A bolt can now be threaded into the anchor and tightened until snug.
Drop-In Anchor Concerns:
- When working in outdoor environments, stainless steel anchors should be used for increased rust resistance.
- If you are working indoor, zinc-plated anchors should be sufficient.
- As a rule of thumb, the anchor should be spaced a minimum of 10 anchor diameters away from each other and no closer than 5 anchor diameters from an unsupported edge.
