Lipped Drop-In Anchor (DIAL)– Simpson Strong-Tie Anchor Systems
The lipped drop-in anchor is a drop-in anchor that has a lip around the anchor body at the internally threaded end. The lip allows for the drop-in anchor to be set flush with the surface of the concrete without having to precisely drill the depth of each hole. The flush mounting of the lipped drop-in anchor allows for consistent embedment in the concrete creating uniform threaded rod lengths.
Specifications of Material
The lipped drop-in anchor is available in zinc plated carbon steel. The steel of the anchor meets a minimum 70,000 psi tensile strength and the expander plug meets a minimum of 50,000 psi tensile strength. Both the anchor body and the expander plug are zinc plated.
Criteria for Testing
In accordance with the ICC-ES’s expansion anchor criteria (AC01) for the wind and seismic loads, combination loads for shear and tension as well as minimum edge and spacing distance have been tested for the Simpson Strong-Tie lipped drop-in anchor.
Lipped Drop-In Anchor (DIAL) Code and Specifications
Federal Specifications A-A-55614, Type 1, City of Los Angles RR24682, Underwriters Laboratories EX3605 and Factory Mutual Report number 3017082 are met.
Lipped Drop-in Anchor Diameters
The Simpson Anchor Systems lipped drop-in anchor is only available in three diameters. Unlike the standard zinc plated drop-in anchor, it does not come in either the 5/8” or 3/4” diameters. The lipped drop-in anchor is available in the 1/4” diameter, the 3/8” diameter, and the 1/2” diameter.
Lipped Drop-In Anchor Lengths
Each diameter of the lipped drop-in anchor has only one length and is not available in multi lengths. The 1/4” lipped drop-in anchor is 1” long, the 3/8” lipped drop-in anchor is 1-1/2” long and the 1/2 ” lipped drop-in anchor is 2” long.
Diameter of Threads
The lipped drop-in anchor size refers to the inside diameter of the anchor or the thread size of the bolt or threaded rod that can be inserted into the lipped drop-in anchor. The threads of the lipped drop-in anchor are national coarse threads, measured by the number of threads per inch. The 1/4” has 20 threads per inch and is commonly referred to as 1/4 – 20, the 3/8” has 16 threads per inch and is referred to as 3/8 –16 and the 1/2” have 13 threads per inch and is referred to as 1/2 – 13.
Hole Size for Lipped Drop-in Anchors
The hole size is equal to the outside diameter of the lipped drop-in anchor. The lipped drop-in anchor is designated by the diameter of the internal threads. The outside diameter is larger and the hole must be drilled to accommodate the outside diameter of the lipped drop-in anchor. For the correct diameter of the hole to be drilled for each diameter of lipped drop-in anchor, refer to the chart below. It is critical that the hole tolerance meets the hole tolerance requirements of the lipped drop-in anchor which is obtained by using a hammer drill and a carbide bit meeting ANSI standards. Oversized holes will make it difficult to set the lipped drop-in anchor and the load capacity of the anchor will be reduced.
Depth of Embedment
The lipped drop-in anchor is designed to sit flush with the surface of the concrete, ensuring the same embedment depth for each anchor installed. During installation make sure that the lipped drop-in anchor is flush with the concrete surface in order to meet the embedment depth requirements.
Installation Tools for Simpson Drop-in Anchors
Each lipped drop-in anchor diameter requires a specific setting tool to be used to expand the anchor in the concrete base material. Each diameter of the lipped drop-in anchor has a designated setting tool that matches the diameter of the lipped drop-in anchor. For the lipped drop-in anchor to be set properly, the shoulder of the setting tool must touch the lip of the drop-in anchor.
Lipped Drop-In Anchor Installation Instructions
1. Drill the correct diameter hole for the lipped drop-in anchor being installed in the concrete with carbide bit meeting ANSI standards using a hammer drill. The depth of hole must be a minimum of the anchor length being used plus 1/8”.
2. With compressed air, clean out the hole of all dust debris.
3. Insert lipped drop-in anchor into the hole in the concrete with the threaded end of the lipped drop-in anchor closest to the surface. Tap lightly with a hammer until the lipped drop-in anchor is flush with the surface of the concrete.
4. Place the correct setting tool for the diameter of the lipped drop-in anchor into the threaded portion of the anchor. Hit the setting tool with a hammer until the lip of the anchor meets the lip of the setting tool.
