1/4” x 1-1/2” Flat Head Split Drive Anchor
Published by Robert Carlisle on Oct 25th 2011
The 1/4” x 1-1/2” flat head split drive anchor is designed for use in solid concrete and is both tamper resistant and simple to install. The 1/4” x 1-1/2” split drive anchor can be purchased online at www.concretefasteners.com to save the customer money as well as to receive delivery of the product within two to three days. Other manufacturers and importers refer to the 1/4” x 1-1/2” flat head split drive anchor by different names, which range from spike, drive anchor, sup-r-split, CSC to split bolt anchor.
Materials
Each 1/4” x 1-1/2” flat head split drive anchor is made from carbon steel that is heat treated for extra strength and then zinc plated for rust resistance.
Applications
Since the 1/4” x 1-1/2” flat head split drive anchor is only available in zinc plating, it should only be used in indoor and dry applications. It should not be used where moisture is present because will gradually rust and weaken the holding values.
Description
The first number in the description (1/4”) refers to the diameter of the split drive anchor and the second number (1-1/2”) refers to the length. The length of the flat-headed split drive anchor is measured as an overall length including the head.
Working Principle
The 1/4” x 1-1/2” flat head split drive anchor is manufactured with the working end split into two halves that are pre-expanded. When inserted into a proper sized hole in the concrete, it will continually push against the concrete in an attempt to return to its original shape.
Head Style
Each 1/4” x 1-1/2” flat head split drive anchor comes with a flat countersunk head. It is designed for use in applications where the head of the fastener will be countersunk into the material being fastened, such as a piece of wood to concrete. Information on a round head version of the same length split drive anchor can be found at 1/4” x 1-1/2” round head split drive anchor.
Head Type
The head on the 1/4” x 1-1/2” flat head split drive anchor is tamper resistant, which means that it is smooth and cannot be removed once installed. To remove the item being fastened, the head of the 1/4” x 1-1/2” flat head split drive anchor must be cut off using a hacksaw or cutoff wheel on a grinder.
Minimum Embedment
Each 1/4” x 1-1/2” flat head split drive anchor must be embedded into the concrete a minimum of 1-1/8”.
Maximum Fixture Thickness
The maximum fixture thickness is calculated by subtracting the minimum embedment of 1-1/8” for the overall length of 1-1/2” to equal a maximum fixture thickness of 3/8”.
Hole Size
The hole diameter that must be drilled into the concrete is equal to the diameter of the 1/4” x 1-1/2” flat head split drive anchor, which is 1/4”.
Bit Diameter
The bit that is used for drilling the hole in the concrete for the 1/4” x 1-1/2” flat head split drive anchor is 1/4”, and it must have a carbide tip with dimensions that meet ANSI standards to ensure hole tolerance. To ensure proper hole dimensions, the carbide tipped drill bit must be used in a hammer drill and the hammer drill must be set in the hammer and rotation mode.
Hole Depth
The hole in the concrete must be drilled a minimum of 1/2” deeper than the 1/4” x 1-1/2” flat head split drive will penetrate the concrete. This extra space ensures that the anchor will not bottom out in the hole and also allows extra space for any dust and debris that may have been created during the installation process to fall.
Spacing
As a rule of thumb, the 1/4” x 1-1/2” flat head split drive should be spaced a minimum of 10 anchor diameters, or 2-1/2”, away from each other. They should be no closer than 5 anchor diameters, or 1-1/4”, from an unsupported edge of the concrete.
Holding Values
The following holding values are for the 1/4” x 1-1/2” flat head split drive installed in 3000 psi concrete and are the ultimate values. The safe working load is determined by dividing the ultimate values by 4 or 25%.

Installation
Watch a video on the proper installation of the 1/4” x 1-1/2” flat head split drive.
- Using a hammer drill set in the hammer and rotation mode and a 1/4” ANSI standard carbide drill bit, drill a hole in the concrete to a depth of 1/2 ” deeper than the 1/4” x 1-1/2” flat head split drive will penetrate the concrete.
- With compressed air, wire brush or vacuum, clean out the hole of all dust and debris.
Place fixture over the hole and insert the 1/4” x 1-1/2” flat head split drive through the hole in the fixture and into the hole in the concrete. - With a hammer strike the head of the 1/4” x 1-1/2” flat head split drive until the head of the anchor is flush with the surface of the material being fastened.
