Simpson Strong-Tie’s Anchor Systems® Titen HD® is a patented concrete and masonry screw anchor that has excellent holding values in cracked and uncracked concrete. The performance of the Titen HD® heavy-duty screw anchor is outstanding under both seismic and static loading applications. The Titen HD® heavy-duty screw anchor is recommended for use in interior and non-corrosive environments and may be used in temporary outdoor applications. The Titen HD® heavy-duty screw anchor should not be used in permanent outdoor applications.
Titen HD® Material and Finish
The Titen HD® heavy-duty screw anchor is manufactured in carbon steel that is heat treated, and is available in zinc plating or a mechanically galvanized finish.
Codes and Approvals
The Titen HD® heavy-duty screw anchor has been tested in accordance with the ICC-ES AC 193, ACI355.2 and ICC-ES AC106 for shear and static tension, seismic, wind and loading in cracked and uncracked concrete. The anchor fatigue testing has been done in accordance with ASTM E488. Code reports as follows, Factory Mutual 3017082, Florida Statewide Product Approval FL11506.7, City of L.A. RR25741 and RR25560, ICC-ES Evaluation Service ESR-2713 and ESR-1056.
Titen HD® Loading
Titen HD® heavy-duty screw anchor are threaded along the length of the anchor. The threads undercut the base material providing higher load capacity and vibration resistance. The serrated head and the interlocking threads help prevent the Titen HD® heavy-duty screw anchor from loosening in a vibratory application.
Available Diameters
Titen HD® heavy-duty screw anchors come in four diameters of 3/8”, 1/2”, 5/8” and 3/4”. Each diameter of Titen HD® heavy-duty screw anchor is available in a number of different lengths used for different embedment and fixture thickness.
Length of Anchor
The length of the Titen HD® heavy-duty screw anchor to be used in a particular application is determined by adding the thickness of the material being fastened to the minimum embedment of the diameter of the anchor being used. The length of the Titen HD® heavy-duty screw anchor is measured from underneath the head.
Anchor Spacing
Spacing requirements for the Titen HD® heavy-duty screw anchor are less between anchors and an unsupported edge because the Titen HD® heavy-duty screw anchor is not an expansion anchor and does not exert force against the base material. The minimum spacing requirements for all diameters of the Titen HD® heavy-duty screw anchors is 3”
Titen HD® Minimum Edge Distance
Post-installed concrete fasteners need to be placed a minimum distance from an unsupported edge. The rule of thumb for expansion anchors is five times the diameter. The Titen HD® heavy-duty screw anchor’s minimum distance from an unsupported edge is 1-3/4” for all diameters.
Titen HD® Inspection
Post installed inspection of the Titen HD® heavy-duty screw anchor is simple because the length of the anchor is stamped on the head of the anchor. During an inspection, the embedment depth of any particular anchor can be determined by subtracting the length of the Titen HD® heavy-duty screw anchor above the surface of the base material from the total length of the anchor.
Drill Bit Requirements
The drill bit used for drilling a hole in the base material for the Titen HD® heavy-duty screw anchor must meet ANSI standards. Hole size is equal to anchor size. The diameter of the Titen HD® heavy-duty screw anchor being installed is equal to the hole diameter that must be drilled into the base material. If the Titen HD® heavy-duty screw anchor is 3/8” then a 3/8” hole must be drilled into the base material using a bit that meets ANSI standards.
Hole Size
Hole size is critical with all post-installed concrete fasteners. For the Titen HD® heavy-duty screw anchor, an oversized hole will cause the holding values to be reduced or non-existent because the interlock between the threads and the base material will be reduced. The Titen HD® heavy-duty screw anchor should only be used one time and should never be installed multiple times because the threads may wear down and the holding values will be reduced.
Recommended Hole Size in Fixture
The hole in the fixture needs to be larger in diameter than the diameter of the Titen HD® heavy-duty screw anchor being installed. It is very important to make sure that the Titen HD® heavy-duty screw anchor being installed will fit through the fixture hole before the hole in the base material is drilled. See the chart below for the dimensions of the recommended hole diameter in the fixture:

Titen HD® - Hex Washer Head
All Titen HD® heavy-duty screw anchors come with a hex washer head that does not require the use of a separate washer. The hex head leaves a very clean look once installed with no stud or nut protruding above the fixture. The hex washer head is serrated, giving the Titen HD® heavy-duty screw anchors very good vibration resistance once the head of the Titen
HD® heavy-duty screw anchors is tightened against the fixture.
Titen HD® - Tilt-Up Installation
A space of 1” under the head is unthreaded on two of the Titen HD® heavy-duty screw anchors to allow for installation into the tilt-up braces used in tilt-up construction. The 3/4” x 6” and the 3/4” x 7 are designed specifically for this type of application.
Titen HD® Installation
1. With a hammer drill and a carbide bit that meets ANSI standards and the same diameter as the Titen HD® heavy-duty screw anchor being installed, drill a hole in the base material. Drill the hole a minimum of 1/2” deeper than the Titen HD® heavy-duty screw anchors will penetrate.
2. Use compressed air to clean the hole of all dust and debris.
3. Align the hole in the fixture with the hole in the base material and insert Titen HD® heavy-duty screw anchors through the fixture hole and into the hole in the base material.
4. Turn the head of the Titen HD® heavy-duty screw anchors clockwise until the head of the anchor is tight against the fixture. Do not use an impact wrench to install a Titen HD® heavy-duty screw anchor into hollow CMU.
5. If the Titen HD® heavy-duty screw anchor will not install completely, remove the anchor from the hole. Ensure that all dust is removed from the hole or drill the hole deeper. Then reinstall the Titen HD® heavy-duty screw anchor by hand to prevent any cross threading from occurring.
